DinnerLong’s Noodle House

[rating:4]

Long’s Noodle House is located on Main Street, next to Au Petit Cafe. It’s an unsuspecting little dive specializing in Shanghainese food, serving deliciously homemade noodles and fantastic Xiao Long Bao.

While Long’s is a bit of a dive, the inside is certainly more comfortable looking than peering in from the outside. They only have a handful of tables, the dining room is relatively clean and the servers are friendly.

There were a number of enticing items on the menu, so it was tempting to order a whole bunch of dishes and eat until our bellies hung out. And that’s exactly what we did. We ordered four dishes: Shanghai hot sauce noodles, Tan Tan with meat sauce noodles, steamed mini pork buns (Xiao Long Bao) and Shanghai style sweet puff pastry.

First up, Shanghai hot sauce noodles: spicy ground meat sauce with, pickles, potatoes and green onions. The meat sauce was slightly sweet and had enough XO sauce to give the dish a small kick. The noodles are homemade, cut perfectly thin, and the texture was almost spot on, being slightly over cooked.

The Xiao Long Bao were served in the traditional bamboo steamer with a side of  light vinegar and ginger with a beautifully thin and firm wrapping, lacking mushiness or doughiness. The Tan Tan noodles noodles were served in a peanut broth with minced meat. The broth was subtle and had a nice consistency for slurping. Lastly, the Shanghai style sweet puff pastry was lightly deep fried, flakey, covered with sesame seeds and filled with sugar paste.

We were definitely satisfied for just under $30 — which is a great deal. We’ll need to make a return trip to try the other tasty looking items on the menu. It’s nice to know there are still places like Long’s that put out solid quality food at reasonable prices. It’s a perfect everyday alternative to pricier (but still worth it) places like Shanghai River.

Perfect for: Reasonably priced homecooked Shanghainese food.
