DinnerCafeteria
!Since the original posting of this article, Cafeteria has closed and is no longer in business.
Cafeteria aims to bring a daily revolving menu of comfort food to this Main Street neighbourhood. Some of the same folks behind Pied-Ã -Terre, resurrect the space where the short-lived Ping’s once occupied with a rustic, yet intimate decor.
(Top to bottom: 1. Endive Salad with Bacon Croutons, Pecan, Apple and Blue Cheese. 2. New York Steak with Twice Baked Potato and Peppercorn Sauce.)
Case and I started with the endive salad: sweet, crispy endive leaves tossed with chunks of pecans, apple slivers, blue cheese and croutons infused with bacon essence. Some salads can try too hard and fall flat on their face in their own cleverness — this is not one of those salads.
The New York steak followed, accompanied by a small troupe of veggies: creamy and buttery twice baked potatoes, grilled spears of asparagus and a curiously shriveled tomato. The steak was nicely cooked, although the cut exhibited bits of toughness from untrimmed ligaments. Extra flavour was had by the bath of beautifully rich peppercorn sauce.
(Top to bottom: 1. Pannetone Bread Pudding with Boozy Custard. 2. Cold Shot of Turkish-Style Coffee.)
Our meal rounded out with a pannetone bread pudding drowned in a boozy custard and topped with a scoop of ice cream. No hot coffee at Cafeteria. Instead, we were treated to a spiced and creamy cold shot of caffeine — Turkish style.
Including taxes and tips, the meal came to just under $50. The atmosphere was cramped and cozy; the staff upbeat and friendly — a comforting way to end the evening.
Perfect for: comforting bistro fare on Main.
