BreakfastSo.Cial at Le Magasin

Based on the awesome experience we had at the Butchershop and Deli, Case and I felt that we couldn’t go wrong with breakfast at So.Cial the Restaurant.
One thing So.Cial has going for it, is the location. It’s got a great atmosphere and a simple yet elegant interior with dark brown and red accents throughout. We were seated by the window so we could do a little people watching amidst the backdrop of old Gastown.
The menu is short and simple. Case ordered the apple and goat cheese omelette. I ordered Bangers and Mash. So.Cial does their Bangers and Mash a little different, instead of mashed potato, it’s basically roasted fingerling potato.
Shortly after our orders were taken, our server brought our coffees. As an added bonus, we received a complimentary plate of homemade, wholewheat cranberry scones with a pat of butter and a thing of berry compote. The scones were off the hook. Our breakfast is off to a good start.
When our food arrived, the presentation was impeccable: well styled and delicious looking. Unfortunately, we were underwhelmed by the flavours. Although the apple and goat cheeses omelette sounded intriguing, the combination didn’t seem to marry well. The omelette was competantly executed, but was sorely under-seasoned. I’m sure the sausage in my bangers and mash are homemade, but the seasoning was overpowering. The meat was also far too dry.
There are a lot of great things going for So.Cial, but it falls flat when it comes to flavours. We’re giving them the benefit of the doubt and chalking it up to an off-day. The delicious homemade scones, and easy going atmosphere warrants a second visit. Hopefully, it won’t dissapoint.
