BreakfastThe New Oxford
The New Oxford in Yaletown is better known for its modern, yet ironically vintage, watering hole status — pouring a good selection of local (and some not so local) draughts alongside some distinctly Pacific Northwestern takes on classic pub food.
But The New Oxford also provides a pretty solid brunch experience. During the day, the otherwise dark and brooding dining room opens up highlighting the exposed brick walls, leather upholstered banquettes and the occasional vintage adornment. And the menu transforms to a selection of dishes that are cleverly aimed at recovery from the previous night’s debauchery.
Case’s BLTA is New Oxford’s take on the classic sandwich, elevating it ever so slightly with applewood smoked bacon, adding creamy avocado and a rich rosemary mayo sandwiched between two, feather-light potato bread.
I really miss the Full English from the now defunct Three Lions Cafe, so for nostalgia’s sake ordered New Oxford’s version which comes with two eggs (over easy for me), grilled apple sage sausage, back bacon from the Fraser Valley, bourbon baked beans, roasted tomato and hash browns. Although it doesn’t quite replace Three Lion’s, New Oxford’s English Breakfast certainly does the trick quite well. Particularly when accompanied with a refreshing pint of Philips Kolsch.
Our meal including tax and tip came to a respectable $42. The dining area is expansive during the day; less crowded. And the staff is quite friendly which made for a leisurely and relaxing brunch.
