DinnerNeighbours Restaurant & Pizza House
[rating: 3] :
Neighbours Restaurant & Pizza House has been a haven for down-home, Italian fare in the Southeast Vancouver neighborhood for years. They serve simply prepared pasta and pizza. Located on Victoria Drive, just east of 49th Avenue, this pasta house is a favourite haunt of locals looking to settle with a nice, comforting meal.
The restaurant decor reminds me of that not-so-cool Uncle, with completely out of date wardrobe and a set of really bad jokes. His heart is in the right place, but he could do with a bit of a makeover. Case usually orders the pasta — particularly the lasagna, which comes on a large plate smothered in blankets of cheese. I usually get their special, a 6 ounce steak with spaghetti. It comes with garlic bread and a house salad. Each dish will run you about $12.
This is comfort food at its core. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare and the spaghetti sauce has a hint of nutmeg to give it that little twist. Case found the layers of cheese on the lasagna to be a bit rich, but overall the food is decent. Neighbours does suffer from occasional inconsistencies in the quality of food (previous visits have yielded cardboard textured steaks and brown-edged lettuce leaves), but in general, it’s a nice low-key place to wind down the night.
Perfect for:
Slumming it down in South East Vancouver with some down-home Italian comfort food.
