DinnerSitar Indian Restaurant

[rating:4]

Located in historic Gastown, this great Indian restaurant has been serving locals since 1983. They have classic Indian cuisine such as tasty Tandoori dishes and yummy vegetarian dishes. The interior has deep red accents throughout — the ambiance here is somewhat old, drab and pretty quiet for a restaurant. The nice thing is being able to people watch while you eat — and believe me, there are some interesting characters out there in this part of town.

The food here is pretty good. I ordered the butter chicken and Tre ordered the Tandoori fish. Both entrees come with basmati rice and papadum as the appetizer. We also ordered Naan bread, and a chai tea for me. The butter chicken was delicious — tender, moist pieces of boneless chicken with delicious buttered curry. Tre’s Tandoori fish was very good: moist pieces of salmon and onions grilled on a tandoori plate with curry on the side. We were a bit worried, because cooking fish tandoori properly is difficult as it tends to dry out pretty easily. Sitar, however, did an awesome job.

The only complaint we had was we asked for our curries to be spicy and it wasn’t. It was mild. The naan bread was not too bad — warm and moist, not paper dry like others we’ve had. My chai tea however, was terrible. I don’t know how they messed this one up, but I would never order this again. All in all we like the food here.
